Zoning and development of a value set for sustainable tourism

Protection of nature in the Wadden Sea region tops the list of priorities, since everybody in the region must be able to enjoy the core values without disturbance. However, a balance between the small-scale and the large-scale must be struck, as it is important that attractive tourist hotspots are publicised to a wide audience. For this reason, the Mooiste Natuurgebied Steering Group (i.e. ‘Most beautiful nature area steering group’) commissioned the formulation of a zoning map, which will enable visitors to be guided to areas where they can enjoy a unique Wadden Sea experience and the UNESCO core values without disturbance. At the same time, it will enable protection of vulnerable areas against large volumes of tourists. It will be advisable to link this zoning map to other initiatives in order to establish a comprehensive overview that will help balance human experience with the protection of natural values in the Wadden Sea region. Ultimately, a universal set of values will have to be developed and promoted.
