Strengthening core values world heritage

In 2014, the entire Wadden Sea region was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This has boosted the national and international reputation of the area and put it on an equal footing with world-famous nature reserves such as Yellowstone, the Great Barrier Reef and Kilimanjaro.

Partly because of this, the flow of tourists to the Wadden Sea area has also increased, as have the associated opportunities and challenges. In addition to protection and development, a World Heritage Site also requires the strengthening of its core values for the benefit of nature and the economy. The commissioning parties, stakeholders and users in the Wadden Sea region want to contribute to a World Heritage-worthy region in everything they do in the area, and it is up to the PRW to challenge them to do so.
